spoilert alertThis is the story of Meg May who can't remember any childhood memory. All she had were fantastical tales woven by her mother, Valerie, and she thought it was real. So when she shared these stories at school with friends, they made fun of her. She resolved not to indulge with any fantasies, imagination, fiction and most especially her mother's tales. She was studying to be a genetecist when she learned her mother was dying, so she decided to stay and take care of her. She also used her time trying to learn the truth about her childhood.
Valerie, at 16, was a victim of date rape. She got pregnant and disowned by her parents, was in an abusive marriage she thought could save her and her baby Meg, and witnessed her husband choking her toddler Meg to death. They escaped, estranged themselves from the past and their acquaintances, and made a new life. Val had been a very good mother, and the stories are her means of escaping and surviving what she'd been through. She's kind hearted and yet afraid to form new relationships.
I cried when Val died. My thought was that it's going to be lonely during her funeral because Val had no relationships aside from Meg and the gardener. But it turned out she'd been secretly cooking for other people as a means to reach out and to help them during hard times or as a means of emotional support. All these people attended her funeral and I almost bawled.

No parent is perfect and yes, as we "become," they can make us crazy. But they have loving reasons for what they do. A beautiful story.
The only reason I gave this book four stars was because it was so very slow in the beginning. I almost didn't want to keep reading, but I am glad I did. It was a beautiful story that I couldn't put down.
There is evocative writing in this book. I probably would not have bought it if I knew it was written from the voice of a 21 year old girl/woman. At times she is hard to like and youthfully brittle. But it was worth reading. The imagination of the writer and her stories are strong and consistent.
When I first started reading this I thought it was really strange and couldn't quite see where it was going. I told myself , "Well, I'll read a little further and if I don't connect with it soon, I'll give it up." I'm so glad I did. It blossomed quickly into something I didn't want to put down. The mystery of why Meg's life had been explained to her in full out fantasy was the mystery of the story and it kept me reading. A t first, I didn't like the central character of Meg at first. Too stuffy and too scientific and resistant to fantasy, she began to relent as she searched for the truth and came to understand her mother and her needs. As she changed, my opinion of her did as well. I began to root for her to find the truth and to realize that there was more out there in the world than what one could see or prove.A touching and glorious love story about the bonds between mother and daughter. The last Paragraph was beautiful and was highlighted and reread by this reader a dozen times at least. I loved this very different story!
What a tender, touching book! The author clearly knows what she is doing. Full of humor and insight, misunderstanding and acceptance, this book drew me in and kept me while Meg came to understand both herself and her mother. The ending was sweet and well-played. Even tragic events were handled tastefully, while allowing the characters to remain in character. Don't read this in public unless you want strangers to see you laugh and cry.
What a Wonderful novel. Having grown up with a mother that loved to tell tales and often being irritated because I felt, "that wasn't what really happened" it helped bring a bit of peace and understanding. Maria Goodin does such a spot on job of describing the often confusing relationship between mothers and daughters as well as how defensive we can become of one another.
As to the story line its self, some of the tales that Valerie tells are hilarious. It made me laugh and at times cry and the characters will be lingering about at the edges of my mind for quite some time.
It's not often that the first thing I want to do after reading a book is write a review!
The story starts off with Meg explaining her mothers version of her birth "I came out a little underdone. Five more minutes and I would have been as big as the other children, my mother said. She blamed my pale complexion on her cravings for white bread (too much flour) and asked the doctor if I would have risen better had she done more exercise (too little air)." this story is beautifully written, very funny (I have not laughed so much in a long time), touching and a bit sad.
As a young girl her mother Val, had always told her fantastical versions of her life, usually something to do with food as the mother was obsessed with cooking. Meg when she was very young, was quite often ridiculed at school as she did not know the difference, between what she was told and reality. Now 21, and studying science, to give her life a sense of reality. She comes home that summer to be with her mom who is very sick, and to try and get some answers about her life, as she feels she does not know who she is and wants to ask her Mom to give her some answers. I will not go into details, but what she finds out and the people she meets, make her realize what is really important or not in her life. There is so much to this story, and if you are like me, you will want to keep reading to find out what happens. Such a good Book!
