Lady Jocelyn must find a husband fast if she wants to keep her inheritance. When she meets dying David Lancaster, she thinks it's the perfect opportunity; she gets a husband for a short while and he gets an annuity for his sister. Things go wrong (or right) when David instead recovers from his wounds gotten at Waterloo.
I wasn't far into this before I realized I had read this book before (apparently, the book has been retitled). Still, I enjoyed the reread. Jocelyn is a brat at first, but David is just lovely. He's very patient with her and helps her to realize that maybe marriage isn't so bad after all. It takes a while to actually like Jocelyn as there's this subplot where she intends to have an affair with a Duke she thinks she's attracted to and I was team David. Mary Jo Putney rarely disappoints though I did think the secondary characters of David's sister Sally and his doctor Ian deserved their own book.

The Bargain Regency series Book 1 edition by Mary J Putney Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Great story - I liked seeing characters pop up from other series- I haven’t read The Rake yet but The Diabolical Baron is first and I can’t find it in kindle form only used paperbacks and I want to read it first. I absolutely love Mary Jo Putneys Books - this is an earlier one and she has grown as a writer - but this was wonderful.
“The Bargain” is a fantastic book. There is relatively low angst and the characters are very well portrayed. Jocelyn is desperate to find a solution to keep her inheritance and marries a dying soldier, David. When his sister, Sally, finds out, she’s livid enough to have a mad doctor save his life. So now, Jocelyn has a living husband she didn’t bargain for, so you get to see how David and Jocelyn proceed with the marriage of convenience that neither expected. Ms. Putney has a wonderful way of making all the characters be likable, except for the aunt, even when they are the ones throwing a spanner in the works. The only disadvantage is that I want to know what happens to every single character from Sally to “the other man”.
Jocelyn's father decided that his only daughter needed a major push to get married, so in his will she gets the money only if she is married by the age of 25. Due to family history Jocelyn didn't wish to get married so when a friend introduced her to a dying soldier with a sister that needs supporting "The Bargain" is struck. One soon to be dead husband for a lifetime annuity for the sister. The only problem he didn't die.

Although, Jocelyn had been educated she had been sheltered in many ways when it comes to male/female relationships. So on one hand she could run an estate and a large household, yet have no idea what passion is. As other reviewers have stated it takes for.....ever to get to the romance portion of this relationship. While I was not expecting explicit sex scenes between the two, I would have liked to see more romantic interaction earlier in the story. As it was written everything happened in the last fourth of the book.

The only thing that held me over was David's sister, Sally's, and his doctor, Ian Kinlock's romance. Once again we had a woman in her 20s with not much experience in the romance department, yet Sally had a bit more gumption to go after what she wanted. I would have loved to have read more of these two. Especially, when she met his family.

In conclusion, it is a light romance with nice virgins and no major bad guys. Something to read when you don't want to have to concentrate to hard.
I ALWAYS finish books. This one, I gave up on at the 30% mark. The heroine was just terrible. She married the dying hero to access her inheritance. Instead of at least working to make his final days more comfortable, she goes to a ball the night of her wedding and plans an assignation with another man to occur in two months time. Deplorable! There is no redemption for such consciousless behavior in my opinion. I’m not planning to read any more of this author’s work.
This is among my top favorite historical romances. It has a unique twist to the marry by your birthday or loose your inheritance plot. And all the characters are lively and distinctive. In fact I actively disliked the hero David's sister, Sally whose negative thinking, comments and jealousy built-up to a painful conclusion and change of attitude for her. I realize the skill of the author in interjecting these problems while the main romance was unable to be fulfilled by the circumstances of the hero. Absolutely brilliant. I have this in paperback and kindle and have just finished reading it again. Still the best.
