I read this as part of a graduate class on child abuse 10 years ago during my doctoral program in clinical Psychology. I found it life changing personally, which I wasn't expecting. Professionally I recommend it to some clients and many students working on understanding the qualities that contribute to resilience. While there are numerous recent great reviews and books built on this early research, there's something about the accessibility of this early work I find refreshing and useful. This is appropriate for self-exploration and classroom adjunct reading at all levels of adult education.Tags : The Transcendent Child: Tales of Triumph Over the Past [Lillian B. For the answer, Dr. Rubin turns to the life stories of adults who were scarred by the worst kinds of family and social pathologies as children yet found the strength to endure and live rich and satisfying adult lives. Each chapter is the true story of a child who endured terrible physical, emotional, and/or sexual abuse, yet managed to grow into an adult capable of working, loving, giving, and enjoying. Many of the abuses are so horrific, and the stories and characters are so well-drawn, that it is impossible not to weep for these children, or to be awed by their heroic strength. I found the last chapter particularly interesting and useful it is a list and description of the characteristics these resilient children had in common. Learning and applying these characteristics, even as an adult, can give individual suffering some meaning and lead to a happier life. I have given this book to my friends who continue to struggle against the effects of terrible childhoods. Recognizing themselves in the book is healing in and of itself. My friends and I are grateful to Ms. Rubin for this helpful work.
I loved this book and think it is very important for anyone working with children. Lillian B. Rubin has taken case histories of children that got such a bad start in life that almost no one would have predicted that they would become responsible, productive and successful citizens as adults. How did they get there? Each of these children had a mentor or mentors at some point in their lives, someone who not only cared but did everything possible to see that they succeeded. In some cases it was a teacher (and every teacher should read this book), in others, a janitor, a neighbor, a friend. While it would be wonderful if we had a village for each child, it is vital to have someone.
The other most important factor was that the child was willing to latch on to the opportunity offered by the mentor or mentors. Why does one child accept a helping hand and another child turn it down? This would take another book to fully explore that. For now, I accept Lillian Rubin's important message - that it is possible, with help, to Triumph over the past.
Very good read. Tells inspiring stories about individuals who were able to overcome the barriers that they were faced with.
An inspiration fo people whose youth was blighted. it does not have to be permanent.
Good book! Arrived in perfect condition from a 3rd party, and in a timely fashion.
Lots of good information in here. I would recommend it.
Not a self help book, rather documented stories of people who have been through hell and got back up again making their lives work.
