(RabidReads.com)I have been in a bit of a book slump when it comes to paranormal books lately and I really needed to get over it. The best thing I could think of to do was to go back to a tried and true series and that’s exactly what I did. I can’t believe it’s been almost two years since I last visited Morganville and I was more than ready to jump back in. Happily, it was an excellent decision.

Morganville Texas is the home to a large group of vampires and the human’s that substain them. Pretty scary concept huh? The town also boasts a college that does not sustain the vampires and Claire started her college life there at the tender age of sixteen. Now almost eighteen, she’s survived way more than her share of murder, mayhem, and downright scary stuff. She’s been through the wringer and still keeps fighting. Claire lives with her three roommates off-campus-big mistake on her part number one-and beginning with this book, they are now staying at the vampire stronghold while the rest of the town suffers at the hands of the only real enemy of the vampires, the Draug. Draugs are water based creatures, meaning not only do they live in water, they are also made up of a hideous watery concoction. They can live off human blood, but it’s vampire blood that they crave. In Last Breath, the previous book, something bad happens to Amelie(the vampire queen)and everyone is still reeling from that. Eve and her fiance, Michael(also a vampire)are having a rough time due to previous events. Claire and Shane are still in love and working hard along with the vampires to dispel the threat of the draug.

Pretty early on, I fell completely in love with the main characters of Claire, Shane, Michael, and Eve. That has never changed from one book to the next. They are all roommates, best of friends, and now are two couples. I’ve loved following their romances and all the problems that are bound to happen in a town full of vampires. A town that no one can escape from. Side characters of Amelie and Oliver, as the two top vampires, were well fleshed out, and while I dislike Oliver, I do care about Amelie, at least a little. As the queen, she rules all the vampires and is ultimately responsible for all of Morganville’s inhabitants. She was also Claire’s benefactor for a lot of the books. That, however, doesn’t mean that Amelie is nice. She’s very ancient and most are afraid of her, but Claire is never shy about standing up to her. But then, Claire is feisty as the day is long. Being a science prodigy doesn’t hurt either. So many other characters are important to the story as well. Most of them feel like people I know by now, twelve books in.

The last book, this book, and presumably the next book, are all continuing story lines. And that’s because the draug threat is major and not something that could be handled in one book. But if you start this series, it’s not like that in all the books. Because of these continuing story lines, I really don’t want to tell that much about what happens, so I won’t.

I recommend that you start with book one, Glass House. If you are like me, you will be hooked pretty much immediately. Rachel Caine has an amazing imagination and it certainly shows in her books. Her writing is very intricately plotted, detailed, and paced, making reading them in order a must. Her world building, and characterizations are nothing short of fantastic. These started out as young adult, but fairly quickly became closer to new adult, but nothing explicit. Highly recommended to ages 16 plus. As far as my reading slump goes, I’ve already bought the next one on audio.

"Black Dawn" concludes the story of the draugs started in "Last Breath". We have had a lot of good plotlines in the Morganville Vampires series by Rachel Caine but these draugs are seriously scary. Added bonuses because they are also such a unique concept. "Black Dawn" sees Morganville pretty much destroyed and abandoned. Only a few vampires and humans remain in town, hiding and trying to figure out a way to reclaim their home. Amalie has been bitten and may be dying or even transforming into one of the creatures.

I loved visiting with these characters that seem like friends after the hours I've spent reading about them. But they aren't very happy go lucky this time around. Things are really, really bad in Morganville. Eve and Michael have gone from engaged to avoiding each other due to the events at the end of "Last Breath". This book was nonstop action. The gang jumps from one crazy and dangerous situation to another. The book is told in alternating character viewpoints which I didn't mind at all except I think that it contributed to the fact that we had very little downtime in "Black Dawn". I missed the banter between the four best friends. I missed seeing into their romantic relationships. Heck, I even like reading about them fighting with Monica or sitting around talking about their newest troubles. This book doesn't have much of that.

We get to see Oliver, Hannah and weird vamp Naomi narrating chapters in "Black Dawn". My favorite (besides Shane, Claire, and Eve) had to be Oliver. I really liked reading his chapters. It brought up so many questions about who Oliver really is. I like the mystery of him. I can't ever really feel like I know him or his motivations. Hannah was there to relate one sequence in particular. I wasn't as fond of her. Reading her narrations almost made me like her less than I used to. Naomi is one crazy vamp. I found her chapters entertaining and they brought up more questions than answers. I really feel like her portions of "Black Dawn" may be our clues as to the what happens next in the series.

My favorite character is Myrnin. Not a big surprise as Myrnin is the favorite of many of the series devoted fans. I am happy to say that he does have quite a part to play in "Black Dawn" and even gets off a few of his trademark quirky one liners. Still not as many of them as usual, another ode to how bleak things are.

Warning Proceed forward at your own risk! There seemed to be an unavoidable event destined to happen in "Black Dawn" then surprisingly it didn't happen. I felt like it would have been a daring move on Caine's part to have this certain thing happen and when it turned around at the end I felt like it was a cop out. It almost felt like Caine changed the story at the last minute. Rumor was this was supposed to be the final book, so maybe she did in fact change it when she realized she would be writing more of these novels. This would have drastically mixed things up in Morganville and I am sorry she didn't go this route. That said, Caine still made a couple of bold choices with her characters here in "Black Dawn". While one thing happened that made me quite sad, the final event in the book thrilled me to pieces. Again, I think its quite brave for the author. She doesn't make this series repetitive and does take some risks. It really pays off when you look at other long running series that fail after awhile.

Overall Another strong addition to the series. Lot and lots of action...almost too much action and some big changes to Morganville fans don't want to miss.
This book had more twists and turns than three rollercoasters. Seriously I did not see so many of these things coming and yet when they happened it all felt seamlessly right. Nonstop action. The battles with the draugs were intense and breathstealing. Pages flew by without me even realizing it because I was so deeply entrenched in the story.

I thrilled at being on other characters' points of view--Amerie, Oliver, Eve, Shane, and Michael. It really deepened the story and allowed readers to see things from so many different perspectives. I couldn't put this book down. I seriously wanted to call in sick to work to finish it. Make sure you read this one when you don't have anything else you have to do because it's agony to put it down. May be my favorite book in the entire series!
