Lion Heat A Novel of the Breeds Lora Leigh Books
I eagerly awaited this book like many other Breed Series fans; however, it was not as good as I hoped it would be. Rachel, the mate, is UNWORTHY! I gave it 2 stars b/c enough of the old characters appear to make the tale interesting and keep forward movement on the whole Breed story. In addition, there are GREAT scenes with the Vanderale's en familie - mom, pop, sons, etc., which greatly redeem the novel and reveal some surprises.I've read it several times thinking that perhaps I missed something important or revelatory facts re Rachel, the heroine's character. I didn't. A more unlikeable, unsympathetic and NARCISSTIC mate would be hard to write. I can't say more w/o revealing a spoiler. It's not the first time Leigh has brought in an unlikeable mate. In Bengal's Heart (two stars), she casts as a mate Cassa Hawkins, who was a borderline irritant/psuedo-villain in 3 prior novels.
Lion's Heat is weakened by something the writer does that is unworthy of her talent for storytelling. She does not expand or color in Rachel's character. Rachel has no backstory, no character development at all. Page one of novel should really be page 50 or 100. The novel starts in the middle of a crisis situation that the reader knows nothing about. Yet the crisis is so important every major player is on the scene.
Back to Rachel, let me share what Ms. Leigh tells us about Rachel.
1) Parents are killed when she is young and she and her sister lose everything b/c her parents made no plans for the future.
2) She was raised/lived w/older sister Diana. Diana is now a take-no-prisoners mercenary.
3) She had an affair w/Devon Marshal in Switzerland, which resulted in her baby.
4) When she was a teenager, she organized Kane Tyler's office, etc. How is that believable?
5) She is able to use a vibrator competently.
You now know what I know about Rachel. You'll learn nothing else in the novel. Oh, number 6, she's a good mom.
I left out my comments about inconsistencies and contradictions in Breed lore, but Leigh scores so low on the Laurell K. Hamilton Inconsistent Scale (10=author is brain dead to 1=author must be tired.) Leigh score on the LKH inconsistency scale is a 6 - not for the number of inconsistencies but rather for their importance in Breed Lore. Otherwise, Leigh's score would be a 3.
Lion's Heat is worth a read for Breed Lore and new events, but I personally think Jonas was shortchanged.
This book needs a Do Over.
Happy Reading!

Lion Heat A Novel of the Breeds Lora Leigh Books Reviews
Oh Lora leigh I could sing your praises all day! I've actully owned this title for a VERY long time (before kindle was a thing in fact) but am just now getting to reviewing it! I'd waited a long time for his story and I must say I loved this story! I know this review is short and not very reviewy (not a word I know!) so I'll just say this, I own a hard copy but bought it on kindle anyway! That should say a lot!
Jonah was the least possessive and manipulative of all the breed books I've read so far and I've always thought he would be the worst. He was patient for the most part and the couple fell in love before they breeded...bread..whateva I thought he was wonderful and kind.
I like this world. I've read most of the series. Jonas has always been a particular favorite of mine... I see that many people are complaining that Rachel is weak and not fit for him. Not so. True, she was not a warrior - she was at base a mother where Jonas was supposed to be this ultimate father type. A lot of her anx - it felt for me at least - was repetitive writing - or just bad editing. Ms. Leigh simply needs a better editor. Does she have one? There were at least 3 instances where the story made little to no sense... I simply guessed and read on.
I liked that Cassie was involved. I am looking forward to her book... though, I am hoping that the story has a bit more of the Mercury's War vibe. Several plot points for the overall story were resolved - at least to a point in that story. Something that Lion's Heat failed to accomplish.
It wasn't a bad story. Overall, Jonas and Dash are my favorites. This book seriously lacked flow and needed a few more reveals to push the story through. Still love the world and loved the leading man.
As other reviewers stated, I have been waiting for Jonas' story for quite a while. I preordered this book months ago, because I just knew Jonas' mate was going to be fierce. Boy was I wrong. I believe the author made the wrong sister Jonas' mate. Diana should have been his mate not that simpering Rachael.
Another reviewer mentioned the inconsistences with the story, however, she omitted the biggest one of all. There's a point in the book where Rachel comes right out and asks Jonas, "Do you love me", to which he answered "I Love You". He then tells her to "Imagine the love you feel for your child, and then multiply that by a thousand. Imagine what you felt the first time you gazed upon her and kew that God had given you the most perfect gift to complete your life, multiply that again. That is what you are to me." However, throughout the book after that declaration she continually goes on and on about not accepting the mating until he loves her because she doesn't want it to be just about the mating heat. How in the world do you tune out a declaration of love put so eloquently. This was not the mate for my Jonas, her sister Diana is his true mate.
I think the author had to stories, one where Diana was his mate and the other where Rachael was his mate, but sent the wrong story in to the publisher.
