The Autumn Man is a new novel by Eric Ian Steele... about two ancient mortal enemies, werewolves to be exact, but aren’t werewolves so yesterday? After reading Mr. Steele’s tale, I can assure you, they are not. The author doesn’t allow himself to be drawn into the current craze of pathetic girly men with fur, and teeth designed for love nibbles!Although his monsters are at times described as beautiful to behold, and there’s a strong undercurrent of a love story, there’s no question of the author’s intent- to scare you, and to scare you properly! Mr. Steele will have you double checking the door and window locks before bedtime, only to suddenly wake… “Dear God, what was that scratching sound?”
You will find few of the overdone werewolf tropes in this story. Yes, the aversion to silver remains, but Mr. Steele crafts a new mythology, I suspect drawing on legends of similar creatures found all over the world, in every culture’s folklore. The result is very original, and develops a new species of werewolf, or at least, a new understanding of them.
This is the first work I’ve read by Mr. Steele, and I wasn’t disappointed. His narrative prose is crisp, and at times borders on poetic. The dialog is authentic, and the characters are well developed and believable.
If a novel of genuine horror by an up and coming author is on your wish list, you need look no further! Well done, Mr. Steele!

Something strange is going on in the sleepy town of Milton. It rolled in with the storm. The same storm that killed Megan's brother, Tom, in a horrific motorcycle accident. Now there are two men poking around Milton. One being a drifter who has taken up residency as a boarder in Megan's home.
Amon may be a handsome, reclusive writer, but he comes with a ton of questions. Megan is attracted to him but she can't shake the ominous feeling that he's hiding something. She also can't help but notice that since he's arrived in Milton, strange things have been happening. Children go missing, then turn up days later displaying strange behavior and an insatiable hunger. The answers lie with Amon. But when Megan confronts him, will she learn the truth, or become his next victim?
This book is packed with a ton of history mixed in with lore. It goes all the way back to the Druids and Roman Empire then weaves into an intense story about Werewolves and a possible fountain of youth. The story itself is a bit drawn out, and I will have to admit, the beginning was very hard to get into. For the first 100 pages, I didn't even know what I was reading and thought about shelving this book a few times. But then, once I got into Amon's past, the story became very interesting and I couldn't seem to put the book down. If you can make the investment, this book is a great read.
I must admit, I would not have read this book had it not been for the review that focused merely on the cover art. Sad and maybe even scandalous that it is in fact, true. But I would not be so petty or small minded to give a fellow writer an undeserved review solely based on that alone. Don't judge the book by its cover. In this particular case, literally. lol! Anyway, on to the more important part of this review-- the work itself. I have to say, the first part was not as entertaining. Granting it was obvious from the first lines of the first page the author had a great command of not only good storytelling talent, but also poetry. It got a bit too heavily poetic though... and I admit wanting to use whiteout on some of the overly descriptive lines on the first few chapters. But as the story progressed, it seemed like the author had eased up on the poetry and got on with the story telling bit. Thank goodness for that. This is really quite a great book with history, humanity and romance weaved ingeniously into a cohesive story. Horror with a dash of Indiana Jones. lol! I don't know if the printed version has the same bits of annoying typo's though. In one chapter there are a slew of paragraphs ( several pages) with quotation marks and double quotation marks where none was needed. Then I read on the last part where the author thanked his mother and her type writer as the origin of the manuscript. I can imagine maybe it explains the error. I found that quite endearing. No, I did not deduct a star because of that. Would be silly. But I found it important enough to point out because editors need to be held accountable and be called out on not so little mistakes like that. I hope the author did not pay too much for editing services that let pages of little error go uncorrected. But to end on a positive note Eric Ian Steele is a very creative author who breathes life and creates depth into his characters and paces his story to keep the momentum, mystery and thrill all the way to the end.
This is a story to keep you up at night. Welcome to Milton, just a small New England town, but with a deep secret or two. Beginning with the death of Tom Shelley, readers are taken into a thrilling horror story that is ages in the making. The ultimate battle of good, evil and that spot in between will have readers turning the pages. The book is fairly long, but that is because the story is involved and the author does a great job keeping everything in order and has great characters. This is one to grab as you search for the cure to heal all.
