Many of the Batman novels I've read have been quite good, however,I didn't enjoy this one. I usually don't write bad reviews, but I had all to do to finish this book. It went back and forth between Batman / Bruce Wayne and his father's ties to the mob and weird experiments to change a criminal's personality to make them stop committing crimes. It also seemed to make Batman someone in his 40s or 50s, but it wasn't ever clear how old Batman was in the book.I understand going back and forth in timelines, but I think that if the book started out about his dad, and then moved to the present, it would've been easier to follow. Regardless, it was a tough read for me. I would give it about 2 1/2 out of 5 stars if I had to rank it. However, I checked the rankings on Amazon- which were quite good. Perhaps I just didn't care for the way it was framed, but I'm sure that many others will!

Wayne of Gotham A Novel Tracy Hickman 9780062074201 Books Reviews
Hickman's main genre may be fantasy but he could easily switch to writing super heroes and make a great living from it.
This character, which even casual fans know is about a young boy who's dad and mom are shot to death before his eyes by a common thief and then he devotes his life to chasing criminals-- all the while wearing a mask and cape-- is approaching his 80th anniversary ( 2019)
And you know what? Despite the age, he's in great shape. The comic books continue to sell despite a shrinking physical brick and mortar foundation of stores where the comics are available. There's a few video games that sell very well and the fans just came off of a very popular trilogy of films that made billions.
If you enjoy the character but prefer not to be seen reading the comic books, grab this novel. It pushes the envelope of what's expected of the staples within this franchise and yet gives it all enough of a spin to make it all seem quite fresh as well as refreshing for long time fans.
If you weren't a fan of the last three films for whatever reason- fear not- the novel is nothing like the movies. In many ways its much better.
Finally, if you just like a really good mystery ( despite a handful of minor flaws- but seriously, what long running franchise doesn't have a handful of minor flaws?) that happens to have a determined man who wears a high tech hero suit to keep the rest of us safe every night, then jump on board. Word is Hickman has already proposed two more novels and he is ( as of today) waiting for word from DC. I for one am looking forward to more.
Let me start by saying that Hickman is a good writer. I have read other works by him and they have been good. This is why it is so surprising how this book was written.
As any beginning writer knows description should not be added in place of plot, and yet that is exactly what Hickman does in this book. He uses a lot of unnecessary description (describing things that have no apparent purpose in the story) instead of giving us the action that a book like this demands.
It should have been so easy to please the reader. It is a story about Batman and all Hickman needed to do was write about Batman solving a mystery (here the mystery of who his father really was) and fighting some people along the way and we would be happy. Instead he stops in the middle of an action scene to tell us about Batman's bionic armor; useful information - maybe, necessary to interrupt a fight scene for - no.
If Hickman would have taken the time and thought about it, he could have easily found much better ways to give us the information about Batman's new armor or a more concise way to tell us about the Batmobile than 4 pages of pure description with no action or relevance to the story that the reader can see at the moment. It really feels like the Hickman wrote this book for the money and not the story.
If you want a good pre-origin story Keven J. Anderson did one about Krypton that was decent.
Wayne of Gotham is worth reading if you are a hardcore Batman fan but you will find yourself trudging through the pages. Batman should not be laborious to read it should move fast with a lot of action and mystery.
Also Hickman does have a very limited knowledge of who or what Batman exactly is. It is ok to reimagine a character, but you really should study who he is before you change him into who you think he could be.
The surprise of the year ) Never did I imagine the words "Tracy Hickman" and "Batman" on the same phrase! Turns out my favorite author from my teenage years did mingle with the Dark Knight somewhere in time.
The result is a VERY good novel, that captures the Batman mythos appropriately (even with nods to "newer" canon stuff) and shows us a yet unexplored (I think) part of Batman's past his father, grandfather and their relationship. It is well written and has some cool tech parts, as well as the usual drama that follows and surrounds The Batman.
Even for a what-if story, the whole story and the ending are nice and very plausible. It’s not something that I would not see happening in the canon storyline.
Fully recommended to people who like Batman, and for fans of Mr. Hickman.
I didn't know about this book or hear anything about it, but purchased it honestly because of the low price, and I like Batman. Tracy Hickman told a very interesting story not only of Bruce Wayne and Batman, but of his parents (more-so his father Thomas) as well. I won't spoil anything, so all I'll say is that if you're a Batman fan, I think you'll enjoy this book. You won't get the standard Batman villains we all know, except a pretty quick cameo from Harley Quinn and The Joker, so don't expect this book to be about them. It's a mystery that involves the Wayne family as well as other families and how it all catches up with Bruce. It's a quick read being just under 300 pages (hardcover) and I think it's worth your time to check out.
